Entry requirements

No specific requirements, but learners will generally need to have an A1/A2 (Beginner/Elementary) level of the Common European Framework of Reference for language skills (CEFR).

Target audience

16 to 65+ years

Target group

The programme targets young people for whom English is a foreign language.

It is also offered to adults who have not had opportunities to develop their talents; or whose specific needs have not been addressed in their mainstream education; or for whom the conditions around standard academic exams may be problematic.  

Structure of the programme

The course consists of two mandatory units, namely Oral English, and Written English. Details of these modules are included below this table.

Learning outcomes

 

Knowledge:

  1. Demonstrate their knowledge of the set of structural rules that make up the English language
  2. Understand and use vocabulary and expressions associated with day-to-day situations
  3. Complete grammar and spelling exercises to show good familiarity with the language
  4. Interpret different types of average texts
  5. Select an appropriate style to present information and communicate arguments in spoken or written English
  6. Select the appropriate level of formality required depending on the situation

 

Skills:

  1. Apply listening and reading skills to maintain coherent communication in English
  2. Apply speaking and writing skills to communicate clearly at the appropriate level
  3. Read different kinds of text and interpret the gist of the passage
  4. Follow and analyse the writer’s story, argument, or line of thought articulated in the text
  5. Express thoughts and opinions independently, in a clear manner
  6. Perform well in job and similar interviews carried out in English
  7. Form well-punctuated sentences and short paragraphs, and write cover letters and similar applications
  8. Communicate effectively in a work environment, or at other places or social contexts where English is used
  9. Practise listening in order to be able to understand extended speech of a standard nature, such as presentations, lectures and broadcasts

Active teaching methods featuring lectures, discussions, presentations, individual and group exercises, group work and feedback, as well as asynchronous and writing practice sessions.

 

Assessment

 

–        Coursework (30%)

–        Oral and written exam/assessment (70%)

 

The lecturer may opt for other assessment methods when necessary.

 

Grading system

 

–      Distinction: Outstanding performance, well above the average (over 85%);

–      Merit: Solid performance, but with some errors or omissions (65-84%);

–      Pass: Fair performance, meeting the minimum criteria (50-64%);

–      Fail: Performance does not meet the required criteria (below 50%).

Active teaching methods featuring lectures, discussions, presentations, individual and group exercises, group work and feedback, as well as asynchronous practice sessions.

  • Use common expressions and vocabulary to argue and discuss their thoughts effectively
  • Deliver presentations and express ideas with a certain degree of clarity
  • Participate in discussions and speak with sufficient confidence

Knowledge

  • Common expressions and vocabulary used in day-to-day situations
  • Styles in which to present information and communicate arguments in spoken English
  • Knowledge of the structure of an effective speech, argument, and presentation

Skills

  • Listening to speech and maintaining a coherent conversation
  • Speaking to communicate thoughts and opinions independently, in a clear and effective manner
  • Forming persuasive arguments and expressing them appropriately in spoken English
  • Practise listening in order to be able to understand extended speech of a standard nature, such as presentations, lectures and broadcasts

Learner

  • Perform interviews and develop confidence in speaking
  • Communicate effectively in a work environment or other social contexts
