Moving to a new country is a big step, and the paperwork side of it can feel overwhelming. Our student services team handles the practicalities — from your study visa to your residence permit — so you can focus on your course and your new life in Malta.

Before you arrive

Visa

If you're a non-EU citizen, you'll need a study visa to enter Malta. The visa is issued by the Republic of Malta and processed through your nearest Visa Application Centre — the specific centre depends on where you live.

Here's how the process works: once we receive your application, we issue you an Offer Letter. You'll review and complete the relevant paperwork and send it back to us — at which point we issue your Letter of Acceptance. These two documents are what the visa application requires from our side. From there, we walk you through everything else you'll need: passport, photos, proof of accommodation, proof of funds, and the relevant fees.

If you're an EU citizen, you don't need a visa to study in Malta — just a valid ID and your acceptance letter.

After you arrive

Residence Permits

A residence permit is the document that lets you legally stay in Malta beyond the initial visa period. Non-EU students apply for one within their first weeks on campus, and we go through it with you step by step. It's more form-filling than fear — here's what to expect:

  1. 1 First week on campus We sit down with you, check your documents, and book your appointment with Identità Malta — the government department that issues residence permits.
  2. 2 Documents you'll bring Passport, visa, MUV acceptance letter, proof of accommodation, health insurance, proof of funds, and your application fee. We'll give you the full checklist and double-check it with you before you go.
  3. 3 The appointment itself Around 30 minutes. You'll have your photo and fingerprints taken (biometrics), submit your documents, and pay the fee. English is fine throughout — no Maltese needed.
  4. 4 Your permit arrives Usually within 4–8 weeks. You'll be notified when it's ready to collect. Once you have it, you can stay in Malta for the full duration of your studies.
